Dr. Jerome T.Y. Shen

Was longtime pediatrician

Dr. Jerome T.Y. Shen, a retired pediatrician and civic activist, died Friday (Feb. 28, 2003) of heart disease while on vacation in the Bahamas with his wife and family. He was 84 and lived in University City.

Dr. Shen was born in Shanghai, China. He was a medical doctor when he immigrated to the United States in 1947 to continue his studies at St. Louis University. He received a master's degree in pediatrics from the university in 1949 and was a graduate fellow in adolescent medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1958 to 1959.

He was clinical professor emeritus at St. Louis University School of Medicine and served as visiting professor for the National College of Juvenile Court Judges. He was head of the Department of Pediatrics at the old St. Louis City Hospital, chief of the pediatrics and the Outpatient Department at Scott Air Force Hospital and chief of the Department of Pediatrics at the St. Louis Labor Health Institute.

He was active as a member of the planning committee for the Missouri State Conference on Crime, Delinquency and Systems of Justice; a member of the advisory committee of the Missouri of Family Services; and president of the Bi-State Interagency Council on Smoking and Health.

Dr. Shen also published "Clinical Practice of Adolescent Medicine" in 1980 and served on the editorial board of the magazine Postgraduate Medicine.

In 1974, he served on the board as chairman of the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Committee.

He received the Cardinal Carberry Pro-Life award from the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1978. He founded Doctors for Life two years later and then the Citizens Pro-Life PAC.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kriegshauser West Mortuary, 9450 Olive Boulevard, Olivette. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 7148 Forsyth Boulevard, Clayton. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Theresa Shen of University City; two sons, Jerome L. Shen of St. Louis and Dr. Tom Shen of Leesburg, Fla.; three daughters, Betty Burke of St. Louis, Frances Schuman of west St. Louis County and Li Poppen of Cobden, Ill.; two sisters, Sister Bernadette Shen of Chicago and Anna Luh of St. Louis; a brother, Mark Shen of Ballwin; and 11 grandchildren.
